End of Time is an album that I have been listening to a lot, almost since it came out. I did presave it, but when I first listened to the album it wasn't something I was super interested in. I gave it another chance a little less than a month later and I haven't been able to stop listening since. What comes next are my takes and thoughts on each song. My takes and thoughts are extremely fallible. So please draw your own conclusions.
I don't currently have a way to host audio files so until that happens, I can provide you with spotify embeds and youtube links to the songs if you would like to listen along.
TSS - END OF TIME
The album is by a french group called TSS, and features CVLTE and Windwaker on two seperate songs. It contains thirteen songs in total including the last song which is a remix of 'Would you be my therapy?' featuring Windwaker. It tells a sort of story about toxic relationships, between different kinds and their perspectives, ending on a bit of an unexpected note.
END OF TIME (the song)
End of Time is the first song in the album, sharing it's name. End of Time is completely instrumental, flowing right into the second song almost seamlessly. This is because it shares the same musical motifs as the second song, 'Notes in the dark'. The song End of Time is actually why I presaved this album in the first place. I found it being promoted on Instagram and really liked the sound. I presaved it thinking that the snippet I heard would be longer, but when the album came out I realized that it was metal and stopped listening. Not because I don't like metal, but because it wasn't what I had expected it to be. I'm biased like that.
Anyways, here are my thoughts on the song. I really like it, obviously because it was what made me presave the album, but I do not think I could listen to it on repeat for hours and hours like I normally do with songs I like. It isn't quite long enough for that.
Notes In The Dark
Notes In The Dark is the second song in the album. It is a continuation of the first song in the musical motifs they share. Good soup. (Bear with me I know exactly zero musical terminology and that includes genres) It mostly talks about toxic relationships and the ways that people try to cope. I think. I'm not exactly an analyst.
I like this song more for the lyrics than I do the other ones which is strange for me because I usually listen for the instrumentation. Part of the song is in french, I have no idea what they're saying. I like it though, I've heard some songs that struggle to keep their tone with language changes and TSS does a good job of not doing that.
Would you be my therapy?
Would you be my therapy is the third song in the album. It starts out with a really good few gravelly lyrics (in french of course) The song covers an oppositely kind of toxic relationship to what 'Notes In The Dark' describes, one that seems incredibly dependent. (I'm honestly not 100% sure if it is dependent toxic, but some of the song lyrics lead me to believe that)
I really like this song specefically because of the guitar during the chorus as well as the really deep and gravelly begining. Also the drums. I can feel them. Holy. It tickles my ears in that special kind of way and you just KNOW that I have listened to it well over two hundred times.
Something In The Way
Something In The Way is the fourth song in the album. I am 90% sure this one is about watching someone you love falling into the clutches of depression. It talks about watching someone lose hope, and tossing everything that matters to the flames. For a lot of people, isolation feels a lot safer than asking for help, and that is something I can sympathize with.
Out of every song in the album this one is the hardest for my uncooked rotisserie chicken to process. I can hear the words they are saying, but I don't understand them. It kinda sucks because I know this song is good but I enjoy it less because I can't tell what the singer is saying. 100% a me problem, my wet noodle is bad at processing language. To a better me it's probably a 10/10.
KILLING ME
KILLING ME is the fifth song in the album. I'm not really sure what it's about. My best guess? A bad breakup where one party wants to go back to the other but can't. It seems as though the singer is cursing either their predicament, the person they can't forget, or both. Either way, the song means something a little bit different to me than I think was intended. My own interpretation is that the song describes chasing after a long gone part of yourself, like a past that you can't get back to. (yes I know that's a pretty close parallel to what the song is probably supposed to be about) There aren't any lyrics in the song that point towards chasing a part of yourself, it's purely a me thing.
I really like this song. Like I REALLY like this song. It is my second favorite out of all of them because of both the lyrics and the sound. It makes me think of sitting on a roof in a rainy clustered city watching the cars drive by at night. Idk I just really like it.
In The Haze We Hide
In The Haze We Hide is the sixth song in the album and god do I not want to talk about this one. It's about taking a chance on someone and that risk ending up hurting you.
You're probably confused at me. Why do I dislike this song so much? I will tell you. It reminds me of music that I listened to in middle school. That on it's own isn't actually a bad thing, but you have to understand that I listened to songs on repeat so often in middle school that hearing this song now makes me feel physically ill. Kind of like that time I listened to a single Arianna Grande song for a four hour flight and now hearing it makes me airsick. My ears get sore and I develop a headache. I tortured my poor brain out of this specific kind of music and now I can never listen to it again. I am sure someone out there likes it though. Just not me.
Particles
Particles is number seven in the album. It doesn't feature any lyrics, being a purely musical piece that focuses on drums and (I think) synth. I'm pretty sure the genre word I am looking for is breakbeat but I couldn't tell you. I'm a casual music listener, not a competitive one. It doesn't share any motifs with any of the other songs in the album, so it kind of just serves as a checkpoint or a rest period. Maybe.
I think it's pretty good, I definitely don't like it as much as the other instumental song 'END OF TIME', but it is up there for me. I really like the drum beat. No big thoughts about it otherwise.
DEAD!(feat.CVLTE)
DEAD! is the eighth song in the album and contains its first featured artist, CVLTE. The song is about being addicted to being a punching bag in a toxic relationship (oho, could this be the theme?), which is something I have seen before in my friends relationships. The lyrics really do get the feeling right, from "There's something in the way she said I am the devil" to "All I know is she's fucking with me clearly...I don't think I can quit because I'm addicted to the pain". Most people in toxic relationships like that know that what they have isn't healthy, but often times it is either difficult or dangerous to let go and they try their best to rationalize the behavior they're being subjected to. Golden.
This is definitely my favorite song out of the album. I personally don't relate to the lyrics but I know people who do, and the music itself ties it together for me. Especially the transition to the low point in the song. I can't quite hear where CVLTE came into the song, which is a little unfortunate. I'm not really a fan of CVLTE's music on it's own but in this song I'm sure they contributed to one of the parts I really like.
Breaking Bones
Breaking bones is the ninth song in the album. This song feels a little bit slower than the others in the album, even though it starts with the same gravelly deep voice as 'Would you be my therapy?'. I think this one is similar to 'KILLING ME', but in a self reflective way. The song talks about how they're waiting for something to change and how, as the title goes, they're breaking their bones again. Having all the foresight in the world but not being able to move. I also think it's something similar to 'Something In The Way in the same kind of self reflective perspective. Instead of watching someone fade away it's the singer who is.
I really like this song not only because it's relatable but also because of the begining. I really can't get enough of that voice. The line about sitting in the rain did something for me as well.
Fantasize
Fantasize is the tenth song in the album. Once again it starts out with a gravelly deep voice (which I am actively falling in love with) and talks about searching for the same kind of relationship the singer once had. One that they sold their soul for. "I sold my soul for your eyes...now I walk the earth just to find a heart to consume and fantasize" points to not fully letting go of something old before persuing something new, and perpetuating a toxic attachment style. I'm pretty sure all of these songs are about toxic relationships.
Of course I have to point to the opening for this song, at this point you know how I am with gravelly voices singing like that. The song itself doesn't mean that much to me personally, but I like the sound of it. The ending also does continue into the next song 'Ending Scene', but not in the same way as 'Notes In The Dark'. I still think it's neat though.
Ending Scene
Ending Scene is the eleventh song in the album and boy is it quite the deviation from everything that came before it. It starts out loud with heavy guitar, heavy drums, and heavy death growl. They switch to their normal style throughout the body of the song, and at the end it becomes echoey and quiet. Only a piano plays as a young girl speaks japanese. The lyrics for the final part are not actually listed anywhere I could find them, although I'm sure there is something on reddit. I just did not bother to look quite that far. The girl is very quiet as she speaks, and I also don't understand japanese, but what I can get from it is reference to a mother, an apology, an assurance that something will be okay, and another apology. I'm not sure what this means in relation to the rest of the song, so let's look at that first.
In the begining the singer admits to seeing the toxic pattern and questions their desperate thoughts before saying "I could try another time, I could die another time...I gave my worst that's all I had, We watched the screen as we both cried, Rewrote the script a thousand times, The ending scene can never last" The trying over and over and over again seems to finally have come to an end. At first when I listened to this album I thought that maybe the young girl at the end was meant to be the inner child speaking to (mother?), but I just don't know enough of what she says to actually have a concrete opinion on it. What do you think?
I really like this song as well. It doesn't quite hit my top three, but it has almost every element of the album contained within it and it makes a really good begining of the end. The sound is also wonderful, tickles my ears in just the right way.
So long my friend
So long my friend is the twelfth and final song in the album (technically it's the second to last but the last one is a remix of number three). This song is much slower in pacing than the others, suggesting that this really is the end. The lyrics are reflective and sorrowful, but ultimately the song is about moving forward and accepting that it's better to live with and work through bad feelings than to try to erase or bury them. It isn't completely positive though. Just in the begining it goes "I stayed the same in the city that you hate, So long my love, Now I'm waiting for the dawn, That never comes". There is still a dark outlook, there is still hurt, and this isn't a 180. Just acceptance. At the very end of the song we can hear the young girl from 'Ending Scene' humming the chorus to 'So long my friend'. I am not entirely sure what that suggests, as I still do not really know her role in the sort of story that the album plays out.
This song is my third favorite out of all of them. The lyrics resonate with me and the instrumentation hits just right between the piano and the guitar.
Would you be my therapy?(feat.Windwaker)
Would you be my therapy? is technically the last song in the album, although this version of it doesn't follow the line of the story that the album tells. The begining of it is the only part that I can tell has changed, with Windwaker and TSS both singing together. I can't really tell what they are saying too well because spotify doesn't have lyrics, but I think it is something about being a villain.
I don't have much to add to this from what I already said about the original version of the song, but I do like the remix. It reminds me of that one DoomSlayer meme.
